Rochon, born in Torrance (a suburb in Los Angeles), is the daughter of Zelma Staples. Her parents are Samuel Staples a graphic designer and businessman. Cerritos High school, Cerritos California is where she finished her high school education in 1982. Rochon graduated with a degree in broadcasting journalism from California State University Dominguez Heights (CSUDH) in 1986. Her minors included sociology, theatre, and theater.
